Unclos to only clear sea border

The government's engagement with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (Unclos) is intended solely to clarify maritime boundaries with Cambodia, it underlined on Sunday.

Addressing public concerns over Thailand's entry into the process and possible sharing of resources as a result, government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek said the process does not involve negotiations on joint development or resource-sharing projects.

She said Foreign Affairs Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow had clarified Thailand's stance to both the public and during a recent meeting with diplomats from more than 70 countries about the process after Cambodia decided to use the compulsory conciliation mechanism.

Quoting the minister, she said the process has nothing to do with the establishment of a joint development area or the sharing of benefits from natural resources.

Ms Rachada said the government remains committed to securing internationally recognised maritime boundaries as a prerequisite for safeguarding Thailand's sovereign rights and long-term national interests.

She said participation in the process does not mean Thailand accepts Cambodia's claims or any proposed solution in advance.

Meanwhile, Ta Kwai temple and Hill 350 in Surin province continued to draw visitors on the second day after the sites were reopened following the recent armed conflict with Cambodia.

Visitors were required to park at Ban Thai Santisuk School before registering and using shuttle trucks provided by local authorities as part of measures to manage traffic and ensure safety in the border area.

A source in the 2nd Army Area said more than 1,500 visitors entered the area by 11am from a daily quota of 2,000. The sites were last opened during the Songkran holiday.

"The turnout not only reflects public confidence in security measures but also highlights the potential of the border area as a historical and educational tourism destination," said the source.
