Top Gun: Maverick actor James Handy stabbed to death 'by girlfriend's son'

American actor James Handy was stabbed to death outside his home in Los Angeles on Wednesday, allegedly by his girlfriend’s son.

The veteran actor, known for his roles in Jumanji and Top Gun: Maverick, was found in the front yard of his home in Tarzana, California at 9.30am.

The 81-year-old was unconscious and had multiple stab wounds to the chest, according to the Los Angeles police department.

He was taken to a local hospital where he was sadly pronounced dead.

The actor’s girlfriend’s son, Michael Gledhill, 44, has been arrested and charged on suspicion of murder. His bail is set at $2million.

LAPD reported that Gledhill and his mother both resided with Handy and that she was his girlfriend.

According to the police statement, a 911 caller said: “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”

When police arrived at the scene, Gledhill told officers he was “the one they were looking for”.

“The suspect resides at the location with his mother, who is the victim’s girlfriend,” the statement said.

Born in New York City, Handy made his onscreen debut in two 1977 episodes of ABC’s sudser Ryan’s Hope, before going on to appear in ABC Afterschool Specials, Cagney & Lacey, Beverly Hills 90210, The X-Files, Law & Order, ER and more.

His filmography includes The Verdict (1982), Arachnophobia (1990), Point of No Return (1993), Jumanji (1995) and Top Gun: Maverick (2022).

Handy has close to 150 acting credits on IMDB.
