Package holiday warning as millions of trips end in chaos and stress

  • A recent survey by Citizens Advice reveals that over four million holidaymakers encountered problems with package holidays in the past year, with 34 per cent of adults who booked such trips experiencing issues.
  • The charity, which receives approximately 14 package holiday complaints daily, highlighted common grievances including unexpected hotel changes, denied refunds, and substandard customer service.
  • Of the 3,500 complaints lodged with Citizens Advice Consumer Service, 42 per cent concerned all-inclusive packages booked abroad, with quality issues (33 per cent) and customer service failures (19 per cent) being significant factors.
  • These problems led to one in four affected holidaymakers suffering stress, anxiety, or upset, while 17 per cent incurred additional daily expenses due to the issues.
  • One holidaymaker, Zorana, recounted a 'nightmare' experience in Lanzarote where torrential rain caused flooding and loss of services, but her operator provided no on-site support, resulting in significant stress and a prolonged struggle for compensation.
