- A Unison survey of over 19,000 NHS staff has revealed widespread worrying health risks and dangerous conditions across NHS hospitals, clinics, and ambulance stations.
- Workplaces were found to be plagued by issues including leaking sewage, rodent infestations, and a lack of clean toilets for both staff and patients.
- One in seven respondents reported vermin such as rats in their workplaces, with a similar proportion citing other infestations like silverfish, ants, bedbugs, and cockroaches.
- Almost one in three health service workers said that conditions in their workplace had worsened over the past year, and one in seven believe their workplace is unsafe due to its poor physical state.
- Unison's head of health, Helga Pile, said that the NHS estate is in a “dreadful mess” and that hospitals should not expose people to harm.
