For Pablo Lyle, the Mexican actor whose promising career came to an abrupt halt after a fatal road-rage incident in Miami, the past week has brought another devastating personal loss.
Lyle, who is serving a prison sentence in Florida, is mourning the death of his father, Jorge Lyle, while behind bars. According to multiple Mexican media reports, the actor unsuccessfully sought permission to visit his father during his final days, only to learn that he had died before any authorization could be granted.
The loss leaves Lyle without either parent and marks the latest tragedy in a seven-year saga that has seen the former telenovela heartthrob lose his freedom, his marriage and his career.
Jorge Lyle died on June 13 in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, at the age of 77. Family members confirmed the death through social media, while relatives later shared details about his declining health. According to El Heraldo de México, Jorge Lyle had been battling a neurodegenerative condition for years and suffered a serious setback after a fall at the assisted living facility where he was receiving care. His condition reportedly deteriorated rapidly in the weeks that followed.
Other reports indicated he had been living with Alzheimer's disease for approximately two years. Family friends told Mexican entertainment outlets that his health had become increasingly fragile in recent months.
The timing was especially painful for the actor because he reportedly knew his father's condition was worsening and had been attempting to obtain permission to see him one final time.
According to journalist Raúl Gutiérrez, who spoke with relatives following the death, Lyle spent several days trying to secure a humanitarian release or temporary leave to travel to Mexico. The request was never approved.
"He wanted to say goodbye," Gutiérrez said in comments cited by Mexican media. The actor instead received news of the death from prison.
The loss is particularly significant because Lyle's mother died years before the Miami case that changed the trajectory of his life. With the death of Jorge Lyle, the actor has now lost both parents while still serving his sentence in the United States.
The tragedy adds to a personal story that has often been overshadowed by the legal case that made international headlines.
Before becoming a defendant in one of South Florida's most publicized celebrity trials, Lyle was among the most recognizable faces on Mexican television. Born in Mazatlán in 1986, he began modeling as a teenager before transitioning into acting. He became a fixture in Televisa productions, appearing in successful telenovelas such as Verano de Amor, Una Familia con Suerte, Por Siempre Mi Amor, Corazón que Miente, Mi Adorable Maldición and La Sombra del Pasado.
His popularity extended beyond traditional television audiences when he starred in the Netflix crime drama Yankee, which introduced him to international viewers. The series premiered just months after his arrest in Miami and became the last major project released before his legal troubles eclipsed his acting career.
The chain of events that ultimately led to his imprisonment began on March 31, 2019.
Lyle was in South Florida with his then wife, Ana Araujo, their children and members of his extended family. According to court records and later civil filings, the family had traveled to Miami to visit his sister and brother-in-law, Lucas Delfino, and to meet a newborn nephew.
The family was headed to Miami International Airport when the confrontation that would alter multiple lives unfolded at an intersection.
According to prosecutors, Juan Ricardo Hernández, a 63-year-old Cuban man, exited his vehicle after becoming involved in a traffic dispute with the vehicle carrying Lyle and his relatives. Surveillance video later showed Lyle getting out of the vehicle and striking Hernández with a single punch before returning to the car.
Hernández fell backward, hit his head on the pavement, and suffered severe brain injuries. He died four days later. Lyle was arrested shortly afterward and spent years fighting the charges.
In October 2022, a Miami-Dade jury found him guilty of involuntary manslaughter. Four months later, Circuit Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez sentenced him to five years in prison followed by eight years of probation.During sentencing, Lyle addressed the Hernández family directly.
"I pray every day for you and your pain," he told them through tears. "I am deeply sorry." The legal battle was not the only casualty.
His marriage to fitness influencer Araujo eventually collapsed under the weight of years of uncertainty, legal expenses and separation. Araujo later revealed publicly that the couple had already begun divorce proceedings before the 2019 incident, though they remained emotionally connected during much of the legal process.
In recent years she has moved forward with her life publicly, while continuing to support the father of her children.
For Lyle, however, the losses have continued to accumulate.
A thriving television career disappeared. Years of freedom were replaced by prison walls. His marriage ended. He missed milestones in the lives of his children. And now he has lost the parent who, according to family members, remained one of his strongest sources of support throughout the ordeal.
The actor is expected to remain incarcerated in Florida until completing his sentence before beginning a lengthy probation period.
