Man allegedly causes pile-up after abandoning crashed car in motorway lane

Police have arrested a man walking along the M1 after he allegedly crashed a hatchback into a truck, stopped in an active lane, then fled on foot, causing a multi-vehicle pile-up.

Emergency services were called about 4am on Thursday, June 11, to reports of a crash on the motorway one kilometre south of the Ourimbah interchange on the Central Coast.

At the scene, police were told a hatchback had crashed into the rear trailer of a truck before stopping.

The 25-year-old man driving the hatchback allegedly got out of the car and left the scene on foot.

A short time later, three other vehicles crashed into the hatchback, which had allegedly been left in the active lanes of the motorway.

Police confirmed no injuries were reported.
