Major League Baseball hails Tartan Army after Scottish fans take over Red Sox game

THE Tartan Army have been hailed by the official US baseball league and scores of fans after more than 10,000 Scots stole the show at a Boston Red Sox game.

Thousands of Scottish football fans took the chance to watch the famous Red Sox play against the Texas Rangers at their home ground Fenway Park on Sunday, and the US took notice.

The official Major League Baseball (MLB) account shared a video of Scottish fans singing Country Roads, writing: “The Tartan Army is out in full force at Fenway for #SundayNightBaseball.”

MLB then followed up with a second post showing Wally the Green Monster, the official Red Sox mascot, dressed up in a Scotland kit with a sign reading: “Tartan Army, we rise!”

US sports broadcaster Kylen Mills shared a video from the game showing Scotland fans partying and a local police officer dancing along.

“Even local police can’t help but join the Scottish party!! Tartan Army is too much fun,” she wrote.

The BBC, which had reporters at the game, reported that there had been "more than 10,000 Scots" present. The broadcaster's Andy Burke shared video of the Scottish fans, writing: “I bet John McGinn never dreamed his name would be ringing round Fenway Park!

“The Scotland/Boston love affair has been absolutely sensational.

“DJ knew his audience…”

At the game, the Red Sox welcomed Scottish fan Helen McDonald after she offered a free ticket to the Scotland game to US fan Mike Morrison, who went viral on social media due to the Tartan Army fans who moved into the AirBnB next door to his home.

After McDonald offered Morrison a ticket to the Scotland-Morocco World Cup game, he said he would try to get her tickets to the Red Sox in return.

Posting on social media, McDonald shared a video of Scotland fans singing “No Scotland, no party” at the Fenway Park game.

“Thanks @RedSox for hosting the Tartan Army at tonight’s game,” she said. “I hope our chants before and during the game brought energy and fun, albeit not enough to help you win.”

Morrison shared an image showing a Red Sox billboard saying: “The Boston Red Sox would like to welcome Helen McDonald to Fenway Park!”

He wrote: “A class act by the @RedSox for giving Helen a warm #Boston welcome on the big board!”

The Red Sox lost the game against the Texas Rangers 4-6, but that didn't affect the Tartan Army. One social media user shared a clip of Scottish fans partying and wrote: "Game long over, Red Sox lost, Scotland’s fans still going strong on the Fenway Park concourse belting out 'Super John McGinn!'

"Superb."

Another fan quipped that Glasgow should be added to the Boston public transport system, writing: "Hear me out…"

Baseball podcast Jomboy Media also shared a clip of the Scottish fans partying, writing: "I've seen enough get Scotland in the World Baseball Classic just so their fans keep showing up at ballparks."
