Kylie Minogue compares cancer to being struck by a 'meteor'

Kylie Minogue has opened up about her cancer battles

Kylie Minogue has compared being diagnosed with cancer to being struck by a "meteor".

The Spinning Around star battled breast cancer in 2005 and went on to make a full recovery, but she has since revealed she was dealt a devastating blow in 2021 when she was diagnosed with cancer for a second time 16 years later.

Now Kylie has opened up about the lasting impact battling the disease twice had on her. She told the Los Angeles Times: "Obviously, that’s a moment that will forever be imprinted on my being and in my memory.

"It’s like a meteor coming from outer space and hitting you on the head. You’re still you, just a different version of you, or the next you.

"There was a lot of uncertainty at the time."

Kylie talks about her double battle with cancer in her new self-titled Netflix documentary, and she's admitted she is fine with walking about her health issues but she tries not to open up too much because she doesn't want to dwell on negativity.

She added: "It's beyond cool that I can talk about it now without really going there - ’cause I'll go if I go there - but I think, in general, my attitude is my glass is half-full.

"When it dips below, of course, it has from time to time, but I try to pump it up to be positive. I was determined to get back to do what I do. I wanted to feel able.

"Before there was streaming, friends would bring me DVDs, but I couldn't get through a movie. Getting down the street was a real mission.

"What does this mean? It was overwhelming in a way that I can’t describe to you. Even if we were to sit together all afternoon, I couldn’t describe it."

The singer finally lifted the lid on her second secret cancer battle in her documentary Kylie, saying: "My second cancer diagnosis was in early 2021. I was able to keep that to myself … Not like the first time."

Kylie didn't give any details about her diagnosis or treatment, but assured fans she's now healthy.

She added: "Thankfully, I got through it. Again. And all is well. Hey, who knows what’s around the corner, but pop music nurtures me … my passion for music is greater than ever."

Kylie also added that she kept the news secret because she couldn't "find the right time" to announce it publicly after scoring a huge hit with her 2023 single Padam Padam.

She explained: "I don’t feel obliged to tell the world, and actually I just couldn’t at the time because I was just a shell of a person.

"I didn’t want to leave the house again at one point. Padam Padam opened so many doors for me but on the inside I knew that cancer wasn’t just a blip in my life.

"And I really just wanted to say what happened so I can let go of it. I’d sit through interviews and every opportunity I thought, ‘now’s the time’, but I kept it to myself."
