Inside Tom Hardy’s most talked about on-set clashes: From Charlize Theron to Dame Helen Mirren

Tom Hardy has cultivated a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most magnetic leading men — all brooding intensity, muttered dialogue and undeniable charisma. He has also, reportedly, developed something of a pattern when it comes to on-set tension.

Over the years, the Venom actor has allegedly clashed with more than a few high-profile co-stars, from Charlize Theron to Shia LaBeouf, with stories of friction following certain productions almost as reliably as the rave reviews.

Now, fresh reports claim Hardy’s latest behind-the-scenes drama may have had professional consequences, with the actor reportedly exiting Paramount+’s MobLand after allegedly angering another star on set.

So, in honour of Hollywood’s most famously intense colleague, let’s revisit Tom Hardy’s alleged history of on-set chaos.

Patrick Stewart

Long before Venom and Mad Max, there was Star Trek: Nemesis, and a very young Tom Hardy playing Shinzon, the unsettling clone of Sir Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard.

Sir Patrick later reflected on the experience in his 2023 memoir Making It So, where he painted a picture of a distinctly distant co-star.

“I didn’t have a single exciting scene to play, and the actor who portrayed the movie’s villain, Shinzon, was an odd, solitary young man from London. His name was Tom Hardy,” the actor penned.

Claiming: “Tom wouldn’t engage with any of us on a social level. Never said, ‘Good morning,’ never said, ‘Goodnight,’ and spent the hours he wasn’t needed on set in his trailer with his girlfriend.”

Hardy, however, has since framed that behaviour rather differently: less aloofness, more sheer panic.

Reflecting on the experience in 2014, he admitted he was “terrified” during filming.

“You can’t hide that, the camera will pick it up,” he told Total Film. “I was genuinely out of my depth. The whole thing was, ‘How can I do this?’ I took it very seriously.”

Shia LaBeouf

Then there’s Lawless, because no alleged Tom Hardy on-set incident list would be complete without the long-running story involving Shia LaBeouf and a rumoured knockout.

Hardy starred alongside LaBeouf in the 2012 crime drama, and for years whispers circulated that the Transformers actor had somehow knocked Hardy unconscious during filming.

It’s exactly the kind of Hollywood anecdote that sounds too absurd to be true.

Speaking to Hot Ones host Sean Evans, LaBeouf dismissed the story outright.

“Yeah, it’s a bunch of bulls**t,” he said. “We used to wrestle all the time and he’s a big f**king person, especially then. He was getting ready [to play] Bane [in the ‘The Dark Knight Rises’].”

LaBeouf claimed Hardy was the one keeping the story alive and “told everybody I knocked him out.”

Still, Lawless director John Hillcoat has suggested there was at least some truth to the tension between the pair.

“There was definitely a fight between them,” Hillcoat told Collider. “It escalated to the point where they had to both be restrained.

“But I was very pleased to hear it didn’t go that way because I would hate to see the outcome.”

Charlize Theron

If Tom Hardy’s alleged on-set lore has a definitive chapter, Mad Max: Fury Road is probably it.

Hardy starred opposite Charlize Theron in George Miller’s 2015 desert fever dream, a film that looked punishing to make and, by multiple accounts, very much was.

Crew members have since described tensions on set, with camera operator Mark Goellnicht recounting one particularly explosive alleged exchange in Kyle Buchanan’s Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road.

According to Goellnicht, Hardy had a reputation for lateness.

“I remember vividly the day. The call on set was eight o’clock. Charlize got there right at eight o’clock, sat in the War Rig, knowing that Tom’s never going to be there at eight, even though they made a special request for him to be there on time,” Goellnicht recalled.

“He was notorious for never being on time in the morning. If the call time was in the morning, forget it — he didn’t show up,” he added.

The account claims Theron stayed put for hours, apparently determined to make a point.

“Gets to nine o’clock, still no Tom. ‘Charlize, do you want to get out of the War Rig and walk around, or do you want to…’ ‘No, I’m going to stay here.’ She was really going to make a point. She didn’t go to the bathroom, didn’t do anything. She just sat in the War Rig.”

When Hardy reportedly arrived three hours later, things allegedly escalated fast.

“She jumps out of the War Rig, and she starts swearing her head off at him, saying, ‘Fine the f**king c**t a hundred thousand dollars for every minute that he’s held up this crew,’ and ‘How disrespectful you are!’” Goellnicht recalled.

“She was right. Full rant. She screams it out. It’s so loud, it’s so windy — he might’ve heard some of it, but he charged up to her up and went, ‘What did you say to me?’”

Goellnicht alleged Hardy became “quite aggressive,” while Theron later reflected on feeling unsafe during the production.

“It got to a place where it was kind of out of hand, and there was a sense that maybe sending a woman producer down could maybe equalize some of it, because I didn’t feel safe,” Theron said in the book.

Helen Mirren

The most recent addition to the Tom Hardy on-set lore allegedly came courtesy of MobLand.

In May 2026, reports emerged that Hardy had been fired from the Paramount+ series after two seasons, with Variety reporting that the Peaky Blinders actor’s departure followed alleged “on-set issues” involving executive producer Jez Butterworth, 101 Studios and others.

A separate report from Puck News claimed Hardy had been consistently late during season two production, frequently offered script notes, changed dialogue, and had grown unhappy with the show’s ensemble setup, which included fellow heavyweights Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan.

Then came the Daily Mail allegations, which claimed Hardy had particularly tested Mirren’s patience.

“Tom’s character is charming. He’s the calm one but it is quite the opposite when the cameras stop. Dame Helen is a joy, she is a total pro and she has worked with so many people over the years,” an insider alleged.

At one point, the source claimed Mirren found Hardy playing games on his phone when he was expected elsewhere.

“She is getting increasingly frustrated with Tom and his attitude,” the source alleged to the outlet. “He can be late to filming too and that is annoying for Dame Helen, who is extremely professional and disciplined. His tone is something Dame Helen doesn’t like, along with his lateness.”

The insider also claimed Hardy “swaggers around like a king” while on set and is “very, very arrogant.”
