In pictures: How night of mayhem unfolded in Belfast

Shocking scenes erupted in Belfast on Tuesday night, with houses and vehicles set alight by protesters following a horrific knife attack.

Crowds gathered across the city, with violence breaking out and residents being evacuated from their homes amid the carnage.

A bus was set on fire in east Belfast, while two cars were torched in the Tigers Bay area of the city and a police car was set alight in Portadown.

Angry protesters were seen throwing projectiles at police vehicles, as police commanders and political leaders appealed for calm.

It came after a 30-year-old Sudanese man was charged with attempted murder following the attack on Monday night.

The victim, a man in his 40s, was left with serious injuries to his eyes, back and face, and is being treated in hospital, where his condition is described as serious.

The brutal attack was captured on video and appears to show a man stabbing at the victim’s head and neck while he was lying on the ground, before members of the public, including one with a hurling stick, intervened to stop the assault.

The suspect entered the UK across the Irish border having flown to Dublin from Paris and was given leave to remain in 2023, according to the PSNI.
