'How is that even a question?' — 007 First Light actors reveal whether the game's Bond could do the job on film

007 First Light.
  • Patrick Gibson's 007 First Light co-stars reveal what they think about the actor playing Bond in a movie
  • Having seen him play and develop the role up front, they all think he's perfect for the role on the silver screen
  • The game's narrative director lauded Gibson for "shouldering this thing"

With millions of players now enjoying and finishing 007 First Light, the dust has settled around one of the best James Bond videogames ever made. One of the greatest successes of the game is the performances by its actors, including none other than Patrick Gibson as James Bond himself.

At the IOI Access event in Los Angeles this month, I had the opportunity to grill his co-stars on all things 007 First Light. We spoke about Gibson's performance specifically, and now that he's done it in a video game, whether he could translate that to the silver screen.

Almost before I had finished posing the question, Lennie James (John Greenway) gave me a categorical "Absolutely."

This quickly rippled around the room too, with Noémie Nakai (Charlotte Roth / Isola Vale) adding, "How is that even question?", and Alastair Mackenzie (Q) remarking that, "He's done it."

It's emphatic support, and delivered without hesitation, from those who have seen Gibson's portrayal of Bond up close, and witnessed the development of this version of the iconic action film character.

Laying on some more praise and also analysis of Gibson's performance in the face of any pressure of taking on such an iconic role, cinematic and narrative director, Martin Emborg said that "he was shouldering this thing [being James Bond] and did an amazing job doing that."

Lennie James also spoke about how Patrick Gibson's portrayal of Bond was fuelled by the actor's preparation for a new, younger look at the character: "He researched the hell out of it. He watched everything, he read everything, he knew where his origin was going to take him, and he was trying to map something that lived with who the future Bond was going to be, [and] that you would believe this was a young Bond."

007 First Light is out now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version coming at some point later this year.
