World’s first prefabricated computing base opens
The world’s first prefabricated computing center base began operations in Qingdao, Shandong province. Unlike traditional bases, the facility connects directly to the green power grid to achieve 100% renewable energy consumption, cutting the electricity cost of processing artificial intelligence tokens by about 30%. It also coordinates with energy-storage equipment to create a smart power computing synergy system that could further reduce computing costs.
Central bank boosts gold reserves
China’s central bank added 320,000 ounces of gold in May as prices edged lower, continuing steady accumulation, official data showed Sunday. The monthly increase was the second-largest in the current buying cycle, just below the 330,000 ounces added in December 2024. The buying streak has now reached 19 consecutive months, exceeding the 18-month run from November 2022 to April 2024.
Industrial-robot exports outpace output
China exported 52,000 industrial robots worth $590 million in the first five months of 2026, a 33.9% year-on-year increase, Caixin Insight Senior Economist Wang Zhe said at an artificial intelligence conference in Hangzhou. In 2025, industrial-robot exports surged 46.4% to $1.65 billion. The export growth rate has significantly outpaced production growth, highlighting the rising global competitiveness of Chinese robotics as the country climbs the value chain toward technology-intensive industrial goods.
Deep-sea wind-power development
China is shifting its offshore wind power development toward deeper waters as much of its nearshore wind potential has already been tapped, state media reported. The country aims for more than 100 gigawatts of grid-connected offshore wind capacity by 2030. Achieving that goal will require further advances in large-capacity turbines, ultra-long blades and dynamic submarine cables, the report said.
