A popular country pub has re-opened its doors after a staff member was attacked and struck in the head with a baseball bat and a rifle during an armed robbery.
Police say emergency services were called to the historic Erringhi Hotel in Grey Street at Clarence Town about 6am on Thursday after reports of a robbery.
Detectives have been told a 53-year-old pub worker had been confronted in the front bar by two masked men and hit in the head with a baseball bat and what was described as a rifle.
The two armed men then stole a large amount of cash and the 53-year-old's car and fled before police arrived.
The 53-year-old was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition.
His vehicle was found abandoned a short time later in Rifle Street, Clarence Town, police said.
Police established a crime scene at the pub and have launched an investigation to hunt down the two men.
Staff at the Erringhi Hotel thanked the community and first responders in a Facebook post over the weekend.
