Christian Eriksen collapse sparks fresh calls for youth heart screening

  • Danish footballer Christian Eriksen appeared to collapse during a friendly match against Ukraine on Sunday.
  • The incident follows a previous cardiac arrest he suffered at Euro 2020, after which he required a implantable cardioverter-defibrillator to be fitted.
  • Dr Steven Cox, chief executive of Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), said: “This second, sudden collapse of Danish midfielder Christen Eriksen is a reminder of the potentially devastating impact that cardiac conditions can have on so many young people every day in the UK and across the world.”
  • Dr Cox highlighted that at least 12 seemingly healthy young people in the UK die weekly “from previously undiagnosed heart conditions.”
  • The charity advocates for routine cardiac screening for all young people to identify and address potentially life-threatening conditions.
