A man is trading the departure lounge for a courtroom after allegedly smashing the windows of a marked police car at Perth Airport on April Fool's Day.

Australian Federal Police allege the man, 52, hurled a stone at a parked cruiser while officers were busy patrolling a nearby terminal on April 1.

The impact was so forceful that it smashed through both the driver's side and passenger-side front windows.

Images of the damage show holes punched through the window glass and one rock resting in the passenger's seat with another on the ground nearby.

The suspect's alleged getaway involved hopping on a bus at Terminal One, but the commute was cut short when AFP officers caught up with him.

Charged with one count of damaging commonwealth property, the man faces a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment.

He is due to face Perth Magistrates Court on Sunday.
