Anthony Guidera dead: The Godfather III star dies at 65 as devastating final moments revealed

The Godfather III actor Anthony Guidera has died aged 65 after spending weeks on life support.

Guidera, who was best known as a 1990s action star and for his role in the Godfather trilogy, died on Saturday.

He had been hospitalized since May 11 after collapsing at his Southern California home.

His wife Valarie told TMZ his heart suddenly stopped and he was rushed to the hospital.

He was put on life support, where he remained until Valarie opted to have the ventilator removed. She brought him home where he died naturally.

The cause of his death is not known as doctors were unable to ascertain what made his heart stop beating.

Valarie said on Facebook: “It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved Anthony. We are devastated and trying to breathe through the impossible, taking each moment as it comes.

“Please hold this eternal light in your hearts and our family in your prayers.”

She shares one son, Nick, with the actor.

Guidera played a bodyguard named Anthony in The Godfather Part III, which released in 1990.

It was the last film in the cult gangster trilogy, with Al Pacino portraying the lead character, Michael Corleone.

Guidera went on to appear in the 1995 sci-fi film Species, opposite Natasha Henstridge, Forest Whitaker and Michelle Williams.

The California native earned an MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss for his performance in a love scene with co-star Henstridge.

He later appeared in films like The Rock (1996), The Postman (1997) and Armageddon (1998).

Guidera also had a slew of TV credits under his belt, having starred in one-off episodes of The Pretender, Angel and ER.

His last onscreen appearance was in the 2005 film, LA Dicks, alongside Dean Alioto and Sarah Wynter.

A slew of stars who appeared in The Godfather films have died in recent years, including Robert Duvall, James Caan and Diane Keaton.

Duvall died in February aged 95.

The acting icon, known for portraying Mafia consigliere Tom Hagen in The Godfather and its sequel, died “peacefully” at his home aged 95, according to a statement by his wife Luciana Duvall.

Pacino said it was an “honour” to act alongside Duvall, who he described as a “born actor”.

“He was a born actor as they say, his connection with it, his understanding and his phenomenal gift will always be remembered,” he said in a statement at the time.

“I will miss him.”

Francis Ford Coppola’s original 1972 film launched the careers of several acting legends, including Pacino, Robert de Niro and Marlon Brando, who played the Godfather, Vito Corleone.

The trilogy garnered dozens of Oscar nominations and nine wins.

It also cleaned up across the other major awards ceremonies, including the Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Grammys.
