Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? to return with £1m winner in ‘dramatic’ new series

ITV has teased one of the most dramatic series of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? yet, with the upcoming run set to feature at least one contestant winning the £1 million top prize.

The long-running quiz show, hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, will return to ITV later this month, with a run expected to deliver high-stakes moments, major losses and potentially life-changing wins.

In a reveal ahead of the new series, ITV confirmed that two contestants will make it to the £1 million question, placing them just one correct answer away from securing the show’s ultimate prize.

Winning £1 million remains a rare achievement. Only six contestants in the show’s UK history have taken home the top prize: Judith Keppel in 2000, David Edwards and Robert Brydges in 2001, Pat Gibson in 2004, Ingram Wilcox in 2006 and Donald Fear in 2020.

Fear was the first contestant to win the top prize in 14 years and remains the only winner since Clarkson became host.

Clarkson said: “I think this may be my favourite series so far. Seeing two people get to the £1 million question was extraordinary. When they’re sitting there on that final question the tension in the studio is incredible, you can really feel it. Can’t wait for people to watch it.”

The new series will also feature one of the biggest losses in the show’s history, with a contestant dropping £186,000 in a single moment, underlining the risks involved as players move up the ladder.

Contestants will once again attempt to climb the Million Pound Money Ladder by answering increasingly difficult questions, using lifelines including Ask the Audience, 50:50, Ask the Host and Phone a Friend.

Details about the contestants and their gameplay have not been revealed, but viewers will be left wondering whether one, or even both, of those who reach the final question will go on to secure the £1 million prize.

Since its debut in 1998, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? has remained one of the UK’s most recognisable quiz formats, with its blend of knowledge, nerve and strategy continuing to draw audiences.

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? returns to ITV for its 36th series later this month.
