Who is Ashok Bahar? The 71-year-old who appeared for NEET to fulfil a promise to his mother, only for 2026 paper leak to change everything

In a country where competitive exams often shape careers and family expectations, the story of Ashok Bahar has struck an emotional chord online. The 71-year-old from Uttar Pradesh appeared for the NEET UG 2026 examination with hopes of finally fulfilling his lifelong dream of becoming a doctor, only to see the exam cancelled following the NEET paper leak controversy.

The elderly NEET aspirant from Lucknow became widely noticed after appearing for the medical entrance examination on May 3, 2026. Dressed in a simple kurta-pyjama and carrying a water bottle and question paper, he drew attention as he walked out of the exam centre after completing the paper.

Ashok Bahar Appeared for NEET UG 2026 at the Age of 71

According to a report by Navbharat Times, Ashok Bahar is a resident of Chandernagar in Alambagh, Uttar Pradesh.

Before retirement, Bahar reportedly worked as a marketing head at Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited and later served with the Ministry of External Affairs. He retired in 2000.

Despite already holding LLB and MBA degrees and being a former student of University of Lucknow, Bahar decided to pursue medicine later in life.

A Promise to His Mother Inspired the 71-Year-Old NEET Candidate

The report stated that Bahar’s decision to appear for NEET UG 2026 was deeply personal.

His wife, Dr Manjul Bahar, is a gynaecologist, but it was reportedly his mother’s dream and a promise made to her years ago that motivated him to study medicine.

Bahar had apparently promised his mother that he would become a doctor like his father.

Coming from a family with nearly 20 doctors, he reportedly hoped to specialise in hepatology and work towards treating liver diseases, which he believed were spreading rapidly.

With support from his wife, who helped him with medical studies and preparation, Bahar reportedly studied extensively before appearing for the NEET examination.

NEET UG 2026 Paper Leak Case Leads to Exam Cancellation

Just days after the examination, however, the NEET UG 2026 paper leak case made headlines across the country.

As per reports, an MBBS student from Rajasthan’s Sikar allegedly received a PDF file containing a “guess paper” before the examination and forwarded it to his father, who runs a hostel for coaching students.

The material was later reportedly shared with teachers, who discovered that a significant number of chemistry and biology questions matched the actual NEET UG 2026 paper.

Following complaints and investigation, the National Testing Agency reportedly contacted investigative agencies, including Rajasthan’s Special Operations Group and the Intelligence Bureau.

Soon after, the NTA cancelled the examination and announced that fresh dates for the NEET UG 2026 re-exam would be declared separately.

Ashok Bahar’s Story Resonates Online

For many social media users, Ashok Bahar’s journey became more than just another NEET story. His determination to pursue medicine at the age of 71 despite retirement, previous careers, and age barriers inspired many people online.

At the same time, the cancellation of the examination due to the alleged paper leak left many disappointed, especially students who had spent months and years preparing honestly for one of India’s toughest entrance exams.

For Bahar, what should have been a step closer towards fulfilling a decades-old promise instead became another wait in a dream he has carried for most of his life.
