On the first day of the road races in the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships, Enzo Hincapie (Grenke-Auto Eder) soloed to victory in the Junior Men's race.
Kaison Smith (EF Education-ONTO) chased in for second place, 50 seconds behind, while Diego Duran (DDP) won the sprint for third.
Hincapie was part of a four-rider attack that went clear on lap five of seven of the 101.5km race. He went away along with Angus McDonnell (En Piste), Cormac Nagle (Hot Tubes), and Egan Little (Velosport), but dropped his companions ahead of the final lap.
He gained 16 seconds starting that last lap, an advantage he'd extend to 50 seconds as he soloed across the finish line to take home the title.
Smith, meanwhile, formed part of the chasing group with time trial champion Kash Adamski (Hot Tubes) and Duran. He escaped on the final lap to solo in for second, while Duran beat a small group of chasers to round out the podium.
"I just woke up this morning, and I had some sort of feeling, like a good feeling," Hincapie said after the race.
"I did a little tester attack on the climb with three laps to go, saw that I kind of split up the group, and then I knew that I had the legs to really do something.
"I was able to bridge up to the breakaway, and they worked with me for a bit, and then I just rode my pace on the second-to-last lap on the climb, got away solo, and just held my tempo from there."
