Typhoon Jangmi warning as Japan braces for flooding and violent winds

  • A tropical storm has injured nine people and caused power cuts to tens of thousands of homes across southwestern Japan .
  • Nearly 400,000 residents, including the entire population of Miyazaki city on Kyushu, have been urged to evacuate due to the storm.
  • The storm, previously a typhoon named Jangmi, battered Okinawa before moving north towards Kyushu, prompting warnings of high waves, landslides, and flooding .
  • Japan's two largest airlines cancelled a combined 600 flights between Monday and Wednesday, with further disruptions expected for routes serving Kyushu and Shikoku.
  • Forecasters predict heavy rainfall, potentially reaching 200 to 300mm in affected regions, and warn of public transport disruptions in Tokyo as the storm approaches.
