Tulsi Gabbard has resigned from her post as Director of National Intelligence following her husband's cancer diagnosis, Fox News reported.
The outlet detailed that Gabbard notified President Donald Trump of her decision in the Oval Office on Friday and her last day in office is expected to be on June 30.
It went on to quote a passage of her resignation letter, in which she claimed to be "deeply grateful for the trust you placed in me and for the opportunity to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence for the last year and a half."
"My husband, Abraham, has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer," and faces "major challenges in the coming weeks and months."
"At this time, I must step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle," she added.
"Abraham has been my rock throughout our eleven years of marriage — standing steadfast through my deployment to East Africa on a Joint Special Operations mission, multiple political campaigns and now my service in this role."
Elsewhere in the letter, Gabbard said she made "significant progress" during her post but acknowledged "there is still important work to be done."
"I am fully committed to ensuring a smooth and thorough transition over the coming weeks so that you and your team experience no disruption in leadership or momentum," she said.
A former Democratic congresswoman and one-time presidential candidate, Gabbard entered the administration with a foreign policy profile that did not always line up neatly with the president's more hawkish advisers. Her skepticism of intervention overseas helped define her national image.
