Trump says Iran agreed not to pursue nuclear weapon; Ayatollah giving approval in talks

US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that Iran has agreed it will not pursue a nuclear weapon and claimed that Iran’s supreme leader is involved in ongoing negotiations with the United States, according to Reuters.

“They say Ayatollah is giving approval in talks,” Trump said during a podcast interview, without providing further details on the discussions.

“They’ve already agreed they’re not going to have a nuclear weapon,” he added, referring to the status of negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme.

Trump reiterated that the Iran talks were continuing, while suggesting that a broad understanding may already be in place.

The US president also said Iran’s Ayatollah is directly involved in negotiations with Washington.

“We don’t need boots on the ground now,” Trump said when asked about potential US military involvement, according to Reuters.

Trump said he was disturbed by Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “constantly fighting with Lebanon,” expressing concern over escalating regional tensions.

The comments come amid continued diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran aimed at preventing nuclear escalation and stabilising the broader Middle East situation, Reuters reported.

Trump has repeatedly said preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons remains a key priority of his administration, even as negotiations continue.
