Today's NYT Strands answer — Today's theme and hints

The official theme for NYT Strands #765 is... "Taking the helm."

And here's an unofficial hint from me: "Sea navigation."

If you're still in the dark, here are some useful words to give you those valuable clue tokens:

  • RIBS
  • RISE
  • ROUTES
  • POINTY
  • CRESS
  • SOOTH
  • PAWS
  • SHUT
  • HONK

Still struggling? The spangram touches two opposite sides of the board (but can start and end anywhere), and will give you a hint about the connection between the answers. Today, it starts with 'S' and ends in 'G'.

Scroll down to find out what it is...

It's SMOOTHSAILING.

“Taking the helm”

🔵🔵🔵

Hi Strands fans. A tricky one today that I only managed to complete without clues by chance. While looking for clue words at the bottom of the board, I accidentally connected both KNOT and MARK.

This was just enough to tell me this was about boats, and when I found FATHOM in the bottom-left corner, I could see the outlinne of the spangram. As is normal with this kind of puzzle, it was thematically shaped, with SMOOTHSAILING spelt out in the shape of a ship with a tall sail.

Three words were left to find in the top half of the board. WAYPOINT was in the area isolated by the spangram in the top-right corner, and I then connected BEARING to its left. That meant I just needed to connect COURSE in the middle to complete the puzzle.

...and the spangram was OUTERLIMITS.

Strands #764

“Fringe group”

🟡🔵🔵🔵

🔵🔵🔵

Hi Strands fans. I must say, I got lucky with today's puzzle. I assumed "Fringe group" would be about haircuts, but then I found the words "limits" and "outer" along the bottom.

I joined them together on the offchance, and OUTERLIMITS was indeed proved to be the spangram.

It still wasn't clear what this meant, until I found EDGE along the right-hand side, and VERGE on the opposite edge. With the theme confirmed to be about edges, I then found BOUNDARY on the top of the board.

MARGIN was immediately below these first words, with BRINK below that. All that was left was to connect EXTREMITY to complete the puzzle.
