Today's NYT Strands answer — Today's theme and hints

The official theme for NYT Strands #811 is... "Staying alive".

And here's an unofficial hint from me: "Battling the elements."

If you're still in the dark, here are some useful words to give you those valuable clue tokens:

  • ACORN
  • SERVE
  • MEALS
  • SPLIT
  • HEAL
  • TAME
  • FAST
  • LAST
  • DAFT

Still struggling? The spangram touches two opposite sides of the board (but can start and end anywhere), and will give you a hint about the connection between the answers. Today, it starts with 'S' and ends in 'T'.

Scroll down to find out what it is...

It's SURVIVALIST.

“Staying alive”

Hi Strands fans. I must say I thought Strands had taken a turn for the dark when I had to use a clue and found it revealed SHOVEL in the top-right hand corner. That feels like the opposite of "Staying alive" - the theme of today's puzzle.

But then I connected TARP next to it and connected the spangram of SURVIVALIST, and suddenly everything became a lot more clear.

I found MACHETE immediately under the start of the spangram with PARACORD below that.

I was really having to rack my brains now, because I am about as far from being a survivalist as it's possible to be, but I eventually connected FLINT spelt backwards in the middle of the grid. That just left HATCHET in the bottom-right corner to complete the puzzle.

“Put down your ruler”

Hi Strands fans. The theme of "Put down your ruler" had me stumped for a while, but then I connected BOUNDLESS in an inverted 'L' shape in the top-left corner. It was clear this was going to be about big things.

Sure enough, I then found the spangram of ITSBIG written from the left of the board to the right.

With the board neatly divided in two, I opted to finish off the top half first. VAST was in the middle, with EPIC to its left. I then connected IMMENSE on the right-hand side to complete the section.

There were only two answers to find in the bottom segment, so they had to be long ones. WHOPPING was in the bottom-left corner, which just left the anagram of CIMOASTNRO to unpick on the right to finish the puzzle. It was, of course, ASTRONOMIC.
