W Koh Samui is a beautiful spot from which to experience the popular Thai island; enjoy long, relaxed evenings before falling asleep to the sound of cicadas
Location
The W hugs the most northerly tip of coast on Thailand’s second largest island, Koh Samui. Flights from Bangkok take just over an hour to Samui Airport, which is one of the sleepiest airports you’re likely to find, and the drive to the hotel takes around 20 minutes.
Nearby hotspots include the Big Buddha Temple at Wat Phra Yai (a 20-minute drive away), found just offshore on the island of Koh Fan. If you’re after a night out, nearby Fisherman’s Village is home to many bars and restaurants. The Angthong National Marine Park, an archipelago of 42 islands, is a popular spot for a day trip.

The vibe
Laidback five-star luxury and world class hospitality without the stuffiness. You can wear flip flops and shorts to one of the most enjoyable dinners you’ll ever have.
The design of W is all about colour and expression, brought to life in a contemporary palette. The hub of the hotel is its showstopping open air lobby, decorated with huge pop art-style artworks of famous figures such as Jack Nicholson and Twiggy.
Away from the shared areas of the resort, the W Koh Samui is all about offering private, romantic experiences and creating a sense of peaceful isolation. The resort is spread out, with villas sprawling out down the hill to the coast on its 23 acres.
Service
A cornerstone of the W’s philosophy is its “Whatever/Whenever” policy of round-the-clock assistance and from the moment you touch down service is superb – a driver can meet you at the airport to take you to the hotel.
Expect two turndowns a day and a concierge service, with buggy rides across the site available on request almost instantaneously and a friendly “sawasdee ka” at every turn.
Members of staff were very helpful in recommending local spots. They suggested we visit Haven Elephant Cafe, an ethical elephant sanctuary, and offered tips for local nightspots at Fisherman’s Village.
Bed and bath
The W has 74 villas, each with their own private patio and pool. The room categories span one-bedroom Deluxe, Superior, Premiere and Premiere Beachfront, all the way up to the Grand Residence Pool Villa – an enormous spot spread over two stories, featuring four bedrooms and a large balcony with an infinity pool, overlooking the entire resort.
I stayed in a Premiere Beachfront villa and it featured a king-size bed, a generous bathroom with two washbasins and two showers, including a superb outdoor rainfall shower – which proved a truly luxurious addition. The in-shower products are by Momo. This room type also has private access to the beach, less than 100m from the villa.
Couples can book the “Romantic Retreat” package which means your villa will receive a glow-up with rose petals, sparkling wine and all you need for a sensual bath ritual for two. You’ll also be treated to a floating pool villa breakfast at your leisure.

Food and drink
Across all of the W’s restaurants, expect the freshest seafood and an international selection of dishes, served in comfortable surroundings.
The breakfast offering at the Kitchen Table restaurant – the main dining space located by the hotel’s entrance – is excellent. Choose from extensive made-to-order options or peruse the buffet, with everything from salads to cooked breakfast items, pastries and fish. The hotel also offers float-up breakfasts for guests to enjoy in their own pool.
During the evening, the Kitchen Table serves a menu full of Thai cuisine, as well as an international menu of items including pizzas and steaks.
Sip Bar and Beach Grill is the most relaxed place to eat on site, overlooking the W’s private beach. A light lunch here with a signature cocktail or two (try the Chilli Mai Tai) is recommended.
The signature restaurant, Namu, is the jewel in the hotel’s crown. Don’t miss out on the superb spider crab maki rolls or the lobster for two. Expect precision and excellence but without the fussiness that some might expect from a restaurant of this quality.
If you can, book a seat at the chef’s table and see the team at work. Or if you’re after an even more immersive experience, the cooking classes are a great chance to try and replicate the intricate sushi dishes yourself.
Woo Bar, right by the lobby, is a sophisticated spot with inventive signature cocktails (the spectacular fire show is well worth seeing, and takes place every night.)
Chefs across the restaurants can adapt dishes or create custom plant-based meals to accommodate allergies or dietary needs.
Don’t miss out on the “Sweet Spots” – refreshment stations dotted around the resort with ice machines, water and complimentary ice cream.
Facilities
The 24-hour gym and workout studio is compact but well stocked, with a separate space for Pilates and yoga classes. The hotel also offers Muay Thai training at an off-site gym, which is a memorable experience. This and other activities can be arranged for guests via the hotel’s Whatever/Whenever team, either as part of the daily activity programme or as private sessions.
There’s also a 25m-long communal pool, with stunning views across the coast. The secluded spa in a quiet corner of the resort is home to seven treatment rooms and a steam room. There’s an extensive range of treatments, including the delightful couple’s massage, plus everything from facials to make-up services and waxing.
