The ties that bind

Bangkok Shibari explores the traditional Japanese art of rope bondage as a form of emotional connection.

Host by Cinema Oasis from May 30 to July 11, Bangkok Shibari features film screening and an art exhibition to counter stigma. To the untrained eye, shibari is often associated with sexual bondage. Practitioners, however, argue that it promotes an emotional connection between the rigger and the receiver.

A nearly-an-hour-long documentary Bangkok Shibari investigates this subculture in the capital. Speaking directly to the camera, practitioners recount their encounter with shibari and its impact on their inner lives. As Thailand has emerged as a centre of shibari, the art form has blended Japanese tradition with European influence and Thai sensibility.

There are three short films. Produced by Nickey Almasy, The Ties That Bind Us explores issues of gender identity, individuality and alienation that comes with challenging cultural norms. Il Teatro Del Supplizio follows Sheng, a rising actor, who is kidnapped and tormented by a phantom after he flops at a debut performance. Ocean Of Strings chronicles struggle to break free from a womb-like cocoon of robe bondage.

Film screening is accompanied by an art exhibition at Galerie Oasis on the third floor of the cinema. It brings together 10 shibari artists including Tom Potisit, Mellow Dog and Ohm Anawat to reflect on the art of robe bondage.

Bangkok Shibari is running until July 11 at Cinema Oasis in Soi Sukhumvit 43, near BTS Phrom Phong. Check showtime at cinemaoasis.com. Tickets (160 baht) are available in front of the cinema. For more details, contact Daniel at 0832765622 or shibariworkshopsth@gmail.com.
