The new Backrooms trailer is a liminal hellscape, and it’s perfect

If you're a fan of internet rabbit holes like me, you'll likely be familiar with the online urban legend of the backrooms. What was once a forum creepypasta has evolved into an all-out internet phenomenon, now with its own movie adaptation set to release on 29 May.

I've already sung my praises about the Backrooms poster, which perfectly captured the story's eerie liminal space horror, and now we've been blessed with the official trailer. Packed with amazing details and fan service Easter eggs, it's safe to say the hype is at an all-time high among fans.

The trailer sees our protagonist discover a mysterious reality-bending realm in the back of his furniture store, leading to a spine-chilling expedition to discover the truth about this seemingly endless liminal maze. With the backroom's original web series creator, Kane Parsons, directing the movie (at only 20 years old), fans are already certain that the production is in safe hands.

Among the outpouring of praise, fans were elated by the trailer's found-footage aspect, which makes up a huge part of Kane's original work. From the terrifying atmosphere to the perfect shade of sickening yellow, the set design and cinematography perfectly capture the monotonous yet claustrophobic quality of the backrooms.

"1:45 they show the same backrooms from the original 4chan post," one eagle-eyed fan on Reddit noticed. "Love how they kept the original lore and made it set in a furniture store. So pumped for this," another praised, while one fan added, "Pitch perfect trailer, from the Backrooms environment to the characters. Parsons has it."
