The most dangerous generation behind the wheel revealed

  • A ConsumerAffairs study, using 2023 federal crash data, found Generation Z to be the most dangerous drivers in the US, involved in fatal accidents at twice the national rate.
  • Speeding was identified as the primary factor in fatal accidents involving Gen Z, accounting for nearly 6,000 deaths, with this age group making up 45 percent of all fatal crashes linked to poor driving behaviours.
  • Millennials ranked as the second most dangerous generation, closely following Gen Z in traffic death rates and other metrics, including fatalities involving positive blood alcohol content.
  • Baby boomers, aged 60 to 79, were determined to be the safest drivers on the road, exhibiting the lowest fatal crash and traffic death rates across all generations.
  • Geographically, Gen Z drivers are the most dangerous in 29 US states, while Montana and Wyoming consistently recorded the worst drivers across most age groups.
