Is The Boys season 5 the final season?
Yes, The Boys season 5 is the final installment of the beloved superhero show.
Unfortunately, this decision is unlikely to change since The Boys' team has been clear on the series' end date for years now. During an interview with TV Line, showrunner Eric Kripke explained how they had decided that Season 5 would be the last entry all the way back when they were working on The Boys season 3. Kripke went on to share this season 5 news with his followers on X, posting a screenshot of the final page of The Boys season 4 episode 8’s script.
"Season 4 Premiere Week is a good time to announce: Season 5 will be the Final Season!" His caption read. "Always my plan; I just had to be cagey till I got the final OK from Vought."

The good news is that even if The Boys is over next season, The Boys universe is still thriving. Gen V may have been canceled but a new The Boys spin-off (titled Vought Rising) set during the '50s was announced at SDCC 2024.

The Boys season 5 plot and recap *SPOILERS*
The majority of The Boys season 5 saw Billy Butcher and his gang of vigilantes trying to come up with a way to kill Homelander once and for all. Their solution was to try and locate V-One, which would allow Homelander immortality and basically bring their hopes of killing him to nil. However, the Supe also learned of the unique Compound V substance and set his sights on finding it too.
After both sides spent a hefty chunk of the season on a wild goose chase, it was eventually revealed at Bombsight had it. In a tense showdown, Soldier Boy took it from him before giving it to his son, Homelander. He took the V-One, essentially becoming immortal.
This left the Boys with only one option: to try and create a weapon that could kill him. Frenchie led the charge with this, conducting the same experiments as Soldier Boy had done to him on Kimiko. Despite costing him his life, these were ultimately successful, leading Kimiko to have the ability to depower any Supe.
In the season finale, she used this on Homelander, leaving him to be a simple human once again. Billy Butcher then killed him after letting him humiliate himself and beg for his life on live TV.
It didn't all end there, though, as Butcher made the decision to try and end the lives of all Supes. His thought process was that otherwise, a new Supe would take Homelander's place. Hughie wouldn't let him do it, though, shooting him to stop him from setting off the virus as he died in Vought Towers.
The show ended on a positive note despite all the death. MM got married, Kimiko travelled to Marseille, and Hughie and Annie January lived happily ever after with a baby on the way.
Alongside the main plot of the season, there were several big deaths along the way. A-Train kicked them off in the premiere, but Black Noir, Firecracker, The Deep and Frenchie all kicked the bucket. Soldier Boy made it out alive, but he's back on ice. You can read our The Boys season 5 ending explained for everything else revealed in the final episode.

The Boys season 5 finale review
What did we think about how it all went down? Well our The Boys season 5 finale review gave the last ever episode 3.5/5 stars. Our reviewer Jack Shepherd wrote, "The Boys has ended not with a whimper, but not with a particularly big bang either. While the series finale resolves the story of Hughie, Butcher and Homelander in satisfying enough fashion, the small-scale action can't help but feel like a letdown after five seasons of build-up."
