Rayman Legends Retold devs say it's a mere coincidence that 13 years later, Rayman Legends Retold is launching around the same time as a new GTA and Assassin's Creed Black Flag.
It's 2013, Rayman Legends was released a few weeks before the new GTA game, and now it's 2026, and Rayman Legends Retold is about to release a few weeks before the new GTA game. But that's not all for Ubisoft's 2013 lineup, as – despite being one of the AAA companies that typically doesn't remake games all that much – the developer is also remaking Assassin's Creed Black Flag. But the fact that all of these games released in 2013 are returning again is a mere coincidence.
Speaking to GamesRadar+, Rayman Legends Retold brand producer Loïc Gounon explained, "I think it's a - I would not say random - but I think it's a bit of an accident that [both] remakes collided a bit the same year." However, while Assassin's Creed "also has new games in development that have been teased or announced" for Rayman, it's a bit of a different story, as "our context, as we explained, is more relaunching the brand."
Gounon continues, "I think what's funny in terms of story is actually that Black Flag and Legends released the same year [2013], so that's another accident." He then acknowledges that the situation is "A bit like GTA. We released the same month as GTA 5, 13 years ago, and now we release nearly the same month as GTA 6."
Thankfully, Rayman Legends is releasing much further out than GTA this time, so hopefully it won't be quite as big of a sales flop this time around, especially since it sounds like Retold's success is how we get a new 3D Rayman game.
