Arsenal suffered a shock defeat to Championship side Southampton and were dumped out of the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage as their pursuit of silverware in 2026 took another hit at St. Mary’s.
From the start, Southampton looked determined to make things difficult for the Gunners and saw some early joy on the break as Mikel Arteta’s men struggled for rhythm in a stuttering first half.
The Saints, who sit seventh in the Championship and are pushing for Premier League promotion, took the lead through Ross Stewart after a mistake from Ben White. Leo Scienza drove the hosts up the pitch and crossed from the right with White leaping but missing the ball in his attempted clearance. Stewart chested it down and rolled in past Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Arteta responded by making changes in the second half and Viktor Gyokeres provided a lifeline by getting on the end of a Kai Havertz cutback. But, it was the Saints who ended stronger as Tom Fellows carried them up the right wing before slipping a pass into the box for substitute Shea Charles.
Charles maintained his composure and slotted past Kepa to send Southampton into the final four of the FA Cup.

22:35 , Mike JonesThe Saints boss told BBC Sport: "We put on a good shift today. It was a challenge, we knew it was going to be a tough game. The second half always has the chance to shift and we reacted quite well.
"You like to have spells on the ball, we knew there would be situations where we need to move more than we usually do and complement to the boys.
"You always need to find a balance, it's not going direct for the sake of going direct. You need spells with shorter solutions and we had a good mix today."

“We just had to bide out time and Shea Charles just popped up with another late winner as well.”

Southampton's poor record
19:25 , Mike JonesSouthampton have been eliminated from each of their last five FA Cup quarter-final ties when facing top-flight opponents, including against Arsenal in 1978-79.

Will history repeat itself?
19:15 , Mike JonesAfter beating Fulham in the fifth round, Southampton could eliminate two top-flight opponents in a single FA Cup campaign while playing outside of the top-flight themselves for the first time since 1975-76.
That was the year they won the competition for the only time in their history, beating Aston Villa in the third round after a replay and Manchester United in the final.
Three in a row?

The 10 Arsenal players who have withdrawn from international duty due to injury
19:00 , Jamie BraidwoodArsenal are preparing for their most important run of fixtures in over 20 years - but Mikel Arteta is facing a growing injury list as a host of his star players have withdrawn from international duty over the last week.
The Gunners may have lost the Carabao Cup final to title rivals Manchester City but they remain alive in their three most important trophies this season, with a nine-point lead over City in the Premier League and through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League and FA Cup.

'We want to be at Wembley again'
18:54 , Mike JonesMikel Arteta says that today’s game is an opportunity to head back to Wembley this season.
“Huge competition, so related to the history of our football club,” said the Gunners boss.
“We’re going to play a team that is in a really good moment, they have won so many games recently, they’re in a really good moment.
“You know the expectations, the crowd, the environment that they are going to create, so we are ready for that, and we want to be at Wembley again, so we have the opportunity to do that again.”
Arteta on Madueke's injury
18:48 , Mike Jones“No it’s not (serious),” Mikel Arteta told reporters on Friday when asked how serious Noni Madueke’s injury was.
“It looked really bad, Noni was really worried especially after what happened to him in his other knee a few weeks ago,” Arteta added.
“He was out for six weeks (last time), but no, he’s nowhere near that injury, so that’s really good news.”
Mikel Arteta ready to chuck Kepa Arrizabalaga back into Arsenal fold for FA Cup
18:42 , Mike JonesMikel Arteta insisted he is ready to throw Kepa Arrizabalaga back into the firing line for Arsenal’s FA Cup quarter-final against Southampton.
Kepa gifted Manchester City their opening goal in Arsenal’s 2-0 Carabao Cup final defeat a fortnight ago.
The 31-year-old has not played at all in the Premier League this season, with appearances only in the Carabao and FA Cups and a Champions League dead rubber against Kairat.

Mikel Arteta ready to chuck Kepa Arrizabalaga back into Arsenal fold for FA Cup
Mikel Arteta confirms Kepa Arrizabalaga will start in goal
18:35 , Jamie BraidwoodKepa Arrizabalaga is “ready” to return in goal following his error in the Carabao Cup final, Mikel Arteta has confirmed. The back-up has played every minute in the FA Cup this season and Arteta is ready to support the Spaniard.
“He is ready to play,” said Arteta. “I’m never going to judge a player or make a decision because he has made an error. Attitude, behaviour, yes, 100 per cent, but an error is part of football, and anybody can do it.
“I don’t know if he needed it (an arm around the shoulder), but he has had it. Just in case. From all of them. From his team-mates first, then myself, all the staff, and hopefully all our supporters.
“I don’t think he needed it because he’s got so much experience, and he’s been through all kinds of different scenarios in his career, so he’s more than ready to play.”

Mikel Arteta on 'speculation' of Arsenal's withdrawals: 'You will see'
18:30 , Jamie BraidwoodMikel Arteta launched a defence of his players after the sight of 10 Arsenal stars withdrawing from international duty raised some eyebrows. The Arsenal manager said it was all “speculation”.
“We have very good relationship and communication with most of the national teams - certainly with [England manager] Thomas [Tuchel] too. We have been extremely supportive all the time,” he said.
“When you have to communicate the state of every player, we are always honest and a medical decision had to be made. That was clear what the conclusion was.
“When you are fit and available to play for the national team, you have to play. It makes us so proud that we had that many players in the national team. Players are desperate to play for their nation. I know how important it is to them. We are fully supportive of that and when we can do it, we do it."

18:24 , Miguel DelaneyAmid the fuss over Mikel Arteta withdrawing players from international duty, there’s a bigger story about why so many top clubs are chasing multiple trophies writes Miguel Delaney in his latest Inside Football newsletter

What Arsenal’s international withdrawals reveal about the state of football
What is the Arsenal team news?
18:18 , Jamie BraidwoodMikel Arteta withdrew 10 players from international duty as worries over possible injuries grew following Noni Madueke’s knock whilst playing for England. His knee problem is said to be a minor one but he will not feature in this game.
Mikel Merino is out for the rest of the season with an ankle injury and it looks likely that Eberechi Eze will not feature as he was ruled out of action before the international break.
Martin Odegaard, William Saliba, Gabriel and Leandro Trossard are also doubts due to minor niggles while Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka were withdrawn from the England squad due to small injury issues as well.
What is the Southampton team news?
18:12 , Jamie BraidwoodForward Leo Scienza has had a groin issue but could return in a boost to Tonda Eckert’s side, as could defender Welington who has been nursing a muscular problem but should be available for selection.
Jay Robinson is a doubt due to a quad injury but his inclusion would not be a surprise but Mads Roerslev is out for the rest of the season with a serious Achilles injury.

18:06 , Jamie BraidwoodKick-off is at 8pm BST on Saturday 4 April at St. Mary’s Stadium in Southampton.

Hello and welcome
18:00 , Jamie BraidwoodArsenal look to continue their quest for silverware this season as they travel to the south coast for an FA Cup quarter-final tie against Championship side Southampton.
The Premier League leaders are still hurting after a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final last month but they have a firm lead in the top-flight and are well placed in the Champions League knockout rounds as they seek to add trophies to the cabinet in 2026.
Their FA Cup run has been without issue so far as Mikel Arteta’s men have seen off lower league opposition in Portsmouth, Wigan Athletic and Mansfield Town with Southampton being their toughest challenge to date.
The Saints sit sixth in the second division and are unbeaten in 14 matches including the previous round of this competition when they defeated Premier League side Fulham 1-0 thanks to Ross Stewart’s stoppage time penalty.
