Rangers chairman admits 'pro-Scottish bias' in recruitment amid summer rebuild

Andrew Cavenagh insists the recruitment of “leaders” will be high on the priority list when Rangers revamp their squad for next season.

Another trophyless campaign concluded with a 5-2 Premiership win at Falkirk on Saturday, with the visitors already consigned to third place and Danny Rohl having come under fire from frustrated Rangers supporters after four successive defeats previously ended title hopes.

Captain James Tavernier has left the club after 11 years and there will be several others who have played their last game for the Ibrox side for various reasons.

Club chairman Cavenagh is backing Rohl and on the question of resources available to the German coach, he said: “I know those are the popular topics, right? Money and players.

“I would say our focus is on building a winning team and we are prepared to commit more resources to achieve that.

“But it is about the nuances now, about finding leaders, about finding the right mentality and it is less about a dollar amount.

“We will go into this thinking, ‘how do we get the best team?’ as opposed to, ‘I have X pounds to spend, what do I do with it?’.

“Last year was a massive amount of change. I think it was about 27 ins and outs or something like that. I would not expect to see something quite at that magnitude but you can do the maths.

“There will still be a number of signings and we will be active again. It will be a step down in terms of volume from last year but one step up in terms of focus on chemistry, leadership, etc.”

Many Rangers fans believe there should be more Scottish players in the squad – Connor Barron and John Souttar were the only two Scots in the starting line-up against Falkirk – and Cavenagh addressed the issue.

He said: “We have a pro-Scottish bias in the club today. Meaning if you have two players roughly equal and one is Scottish we will take the Scottish player.

“When we look at what positions we are filling we don’t start with people, we start with profiles. What position is it, what type of person is it.

“An athletic centre-back or a ball-winning centre-back for example. How big, how fast? We are always asking who is Scottish that fits that profile.

“Every time we are looking at that. That’s not to say we can just go out and grab 11 Scots off the street and win the title.

“It is a bias towards Scottish players but that doesn’t mean that’s the only criteria we look at to build a winning team. I would say we equally look at an SPFL bias.

“If we’re looking at two players who are roughly similar and one has extensive SPFL experience against one does not, we would take the SPFL experienced player.”
