Queensland independent MP Jimmy Sullivan has been found dead at his home in Brisbane.
Police confirmed they were called to an address in the suburb of Stafford around 10.15pm on Thursday night, where they found a man’s body. Officers said the death is not being treated as suspicious, and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
Sullivan, 44, was first elected to the Queensland parliament in 2020 as the Labor member for Stafford, before being re-elected in 2024. He was expelled from the Labor Party caucus last year and had been sitting on the crossbench as an independent MP.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli said residents would be “shocked to hear” of Sullivan’s death.
“On behalf of all Queenslanders, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time,” he said in a statement.
Former Labor MP for Redlands, Kim Richards, shared her condolences online, saying she was “deeply saddened” by the news.
“During my time in Parliament, Jimmy was a great colleague, a valued member of our committee team and a real support to me,” she wrote. “My thoughts are with his family and friends.”
Before entering parliament, Sullivan worked as chief of staff to then-attorney-general Yvette D’Ath. His career in politics was marked by both dedication to his community and a series of personal challenges that became public in the past two years.
In 2025, he defended himself in parliament after being expelled from the Labor caucus amid allegations of a domestic incident. Sullivan told the House the matter was not violent and had been dismissed quickly by the courts.
“I swore, Mr Speaker, and that’s the basis of what these matters are about,” he said at the time, referencing his struggles with post-traumatic stress following the death of his first daughter.
His passing will trigger a by-election in the seat of Stafford.
