PlayStation Plus subscription prices are going up once again.
Today, Sony announced that new PlayStation Plus prices will take effect for new subscribers, or current subscribers whose subscription changes or lapses, on Wednesday, May 20.
A one-month sub for PlayStation Plus Essential, the most basic tier of the service, will now cost $10.99 USD / €9.99 EUR / £7.99 GBP. It is currently $9.99 for one month, making this a $1 or 10% increase.
A three-month sub for PS Plus Essential will now cost $$27.99 USD / €27.99 EUR / £21.99 GBP. Right now, you can get this for $24.99 per month, meaning it's getting a $3 or roughly 12% increase.
It's unclear how the 12-month option for the subscription, which is handily the best value, will be affected. Sony's wording at least suggests it is unaffected, which isn't entirely unusual for subscription price hikes like this, as providers generally like to lock in as much user time and money as possible up front. Currently, it is $79.99 for one year of PS Plus Essential.
Sony blames "ongoing market conditions" in its announcement, not specifying what market conditions suddenly affected the price of an all-digital service, when those market conditions may be resolved, or whether prices may fall following that resolution.
As a refresher, PlayStation Plus Essential comes with access to online multiplayer, some exclusive PlayStation Store discounts, share play and cloud storage support, and access to the monthly selection of 'free' games. It notably does not come with the PS Plus game catalog, a (more) static, larger collection of games available to Extra and Premium subscribers. These tiers were implemented years ago and have previously seen their own price hikes.
This week's PS Plus price increase is the latest in a growing line of hikes making gaming more expensive. Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki said last week that yet another price increase for the PS5 itself isn't the "plan."
