Only one in five England fans back national team for World Cup success

  • Only 20 per cent of England fans are backing their national team to win the Fifa World Cup, a figure significantly lower than several European counterparts , despite the squad being among the tournament favourites.
  • Data from bookmakers Entain reveals Portugal leads in “patriotic punting” with 57 per cent of domestic bets placed on their national side, followed by France at 29 per cent, Austria at 25 per cent, and Germany at 24 per cent.
  • Support for the national team is even lower in Scotland , where only nine per cent of domestic bets are placed on their side, who are currently priced at 300/1 to win the tournament.
  • Globally, Spain emerges as the most-backed team across Entain's markets, followed by France, while England and Portugal are tied for third place in overall betting stakes.
  • Tom Ritzema, Entain's group trading director, commented that 'football loyalty and betting logic don't always go hand in hand,' suggesting England fans' past disappointments lead them to consider other teams.
