NASCAR loses a giant: Racing world mourns the loss of Kyle Busch

NASCAR is reeling from the sudden and tragic death of two-time Cup Series champion Kyle Busch, a "giant of the sport" whose competitive fire and immense talent captivated fans for over two decades.

The devastating news was announced in a joint statement from the Busch Family, Richard Childress Racing, and NASCAR, which declared, "Our entire NASCAR family is heartbroken by the loss of Kyle Busch." The statement described him as a "future Hall of Famer" and "a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation."

The joint statement highlighted Busch's profound impact on the sport, noting he was "fierce, he was passionate, he was immensely skilled and he cared deeply about the sport and fans."

Throughout a career spanning more than two decades, Busch set records in national series wins, secured championships at NASCAR’s highest level, and fostered the next generation of drivers as an owner in the Truck Series.

His "sharp wit and competitive spirit sparked a deep emotional connection with race fans of every age, creating the proud and loyal ‘Rowdy Nation’." He is survived by his wife Samantha, children Brexton and Lennix, his parents, and brother Kurt.

The motorsports community has expressed profound shock and grief at the loss. Dale Earnhardt Jr., a former rival who became a close friend, shared his heartbreak, recalling how Busch initiated a conversation to mend their challenging relationship.

"Kyle and I had a really challenging existence for many years. But we luckily took the time to figure out our differences and that was something he instigated with a conversation in his bus," Earnhardt Jr. said. He added that he was "super eager for us to get on better terms," but it was Busch who "made the effort for that to be possible."

Earnhardt Jr. also revealed recent plans: "Most recently we had even been discussing him running my Late Model at Wilkesboro this summer. He seemed extremely happy and we had planned to meet up next Thursday to get his seat to the shop. He laughed over the idea of his fans and JRM fans having to cheer in unison during that race."

He concluded, "Kyle was one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history. No one can deny that. But he was also a father, a husband, brother, son, and a friend to many. My heart is broken for the Busch family."

Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports, where Busch once drove, called the loss "an incredibly painful shock for all of us and a heartbreaking loss for the NASCAR family." He praised Busch as "one of the most talented drivers I’ve ever seen and a racer in the truest sense of the word," noting his "fire and competitive spirit that drove him to be great."

Hendrick also highlighted Busch's devotion to his family, stating, "As much as he loved to drive a race car, nothing brought him more joy than being a husband, a father and watching his son race."

Jeff Gordon, Hendrick Motorsports vice chairman, echoed this, calling Busch "a fierce competitor who demanded the very best from himself each time he put on the helmet," but also emphasizing, "beyond the track, he loved his family deeply and was incredibly proud of Samantha, Brexton and Lennix."

Seven-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, a former teammate, also paid tribute. "Kyle wasn’t just one of the fiercest competitors our sport has ever seen, he was one of the most talented race car drivers I’ve ever shared a track with," Johnson stated. "His passion, intensity, and love for racing were unmatched, and his impact on this sport will be felt forever." He added, "I’ll always remember the many laughs and conversations away from the spotlight, and most importantly the way he cared so deeply about his family."

Joe Gibbs Racing, another former team, expressed their heartbreak for his family, calling Busch "a fierce competitor, an incredible teammate, and, far more importantly, a devoted husband, father, and son."

Former teammate Denny Hamlin simply posted on social media, "Absolutely cannot comprehend this news. We just need to think of his family during this time. We love you KB." Brad Keselowski, a long-time rival, reflected on their intense competition.

"I made him earn every victory and stole a few from him along the way," Keselowski said. "We took our shots at each other, in the media and on the track. But I’d like to think that somewhere deep down there was an appreciation that we pushed each other to perform at the highest level, even if neither of us would’ve admitted it.

Tonight, I feel a little like the coyote with no more roadrunner to chase. His loss is all of our loss, but none more so than his family’s. Thinking of Samantha, and Brexton and Lennix who lost their father today."

Beyond the track, Busch was also a generous benefactor, co-founding the Bundle of Joy Fund with his wife, Samantha, to support families struggling with infertility. General Motors President Mark Reuss noted, "The shocking news of Kyle’s passing is devastating to me, and to everyone at Chevrolet and General Motors."

He added, "He was a fierce competitor who found success both as a driver and team owner, as well as a generous benefactor to countless families with the Bundle of Joy Fund he founded with his wife, Samantha. On top of all that, he found time to be a true friend to us all."

Indianapolis Motor Speedway President J. Douglas Boles remembered Busch as "one of the most dominant racers in IMS history," highlighting his back-to-back NASCAR Cup Series Brickyard 400 victories in 2015 and 2016, where he made history by sweeping both the Cup and NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series races in those years.

Boles noted, "He won a record four O’Reilly Series races at the Racing Capital of the World and made his 700th career Cup Series start in the 30th anniversary 2024 Brickyard 400 at IMS — a significant career milestone. He was a fan favorite, loved for his competitive spirit and passion. He understood what racing and winning at Indianapolis means."

Toyota Racing Development USA President Tyler Gibbs added, "Kyle and Toyota were synonymous with winning for 15 years, with countless record-breaking milestones, race victories and multiple championships celebrated together. While there were many exciting moments spent in victory lane, Kyle’s personal relationship with the entire Toyota family was even more memorable. His impact on NASCAR and the whole motorsports community cannot be measured."

The outpouring of tributes from across the industry, including from Team Penske, which stated, "We’re incredibly saddened to learn about the unexpected passing of Kyle Busch. A tenacious competitor, he leveraged his talent and relentless drive to elevate NASCAR at every level. We had great respect for the intensity he brought to the sport," underscores the immense void left by Busch's passing.

"NASCAR lost a giant of the sport today, far too soon," the joint statement concluded, asking everyone to "respect the family’s privacy and continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers" during this incredibly difficult time.
