NASA unveils massive plan and accelerated timeline for permanent moon base

  • NASA announced plans to launch the first missions before the end of the year to begin building a moon base, with the ultimate goal of establishing early habitation by 2029.
  • The moon base is intended to serve as a critical outpost for astronauts participating in the Artemis program, facilitating longer stays and deeper exploration as a stepping stone for future human missions to Mars .
  • The initial mission involves a partnership with Jeff Bezos’ aerospace company Blue Origin, marking the first privately-funded lunar lander mission in history, which will test landing capabilities and deploy science payloads at the moon’s South Pole this fall.
  • Further missions slated for this year include the delivery of the largest commercial payload to the lunar surface, featuring a rover from AstroLab, and a separate payload contributed by the European and Korean Space Agencies.
  • Commercial partners such as AstroLab and Lunar Outpost are developing advanced lunar terrain vehicles for astronaut use and autonomous mapping, while Firefly spacecraft will deploy Moonfall drones to characterize the radiation environment and prospect for water and ice.
