At least 1 dead and several missing after paper mill chemical explosion

  • A chemical explosion occurred at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging paper mill in Longview, Washington , on Tuesday around 7:15 a.m. local time.
  • The incident was caused by the rupture of a tank containing "white liquor," a chemical used in paper production, which was approximately 60 percent full of its 80,000-gallon capacity.
  • Officials have confirmed one person has died, and nine employees are currently missing following the incident.
  • Ten individuals, including eight employees and one firefighter, were hospitalized with various injuries, some involving chemical burns.
  • Recovery efforts at the site are paused until Wednesday due to the ruptured tank remaining unstable and creating hazardous conditions for emergency personnel.
