Michael Jackson biopic sequel in the works amid controversy

  • Lionsgate has confirmed a sequel to the Michael Jackson biopic Michael , despite the first film receiving overwhelmingly negative critical reviews.
  • The initial film achieved significant commercial success, securing the biggest opening weekend for any music biopic in history with $217m (£160m) in takings globally and a whopping $715.8m (£533.2m) worldwide.
  • Lionsgate motion picture chair Adam Fogelson stated that preparations for the second film are progressing well and will explore aspects of Jackson's life and music not covered in the first instalment.
  • The first movie concluded with Jackson's 1988 Bad tour, with scenes detailing early Nineties sexual abuse allegations being cut at the last minute to avoid breaching a settlement agreement.
  • Fogelson revealed that approximately 25 to 30 per cent of the second film has already been shot from previous production, which will offer financial benefits.
