Met Police officer who assaulted a detained man lying in a hospital bed is sacked

PC Omar Campedelli has been barred from policing after he was found to have committed gross misconduct - (PA Archive)

A Met Police officer who assaulted a detained man while guarding him in hospital has been sacked.

A misconduct hearing found that PC Omar Campedelli, who was based at the Central West Basic Command Unit, used “excessive” force when he slapped a detainee across the head for apparently spitting towards the officer’s legs.

The incident took place on December 1 2025, when PC Campedelli was carrying out a hospital guard. The male detainee was handcuffed and lying on a hospital bed.

PC Campdelli failed to report or record the slap on a use of force form.

At the hearing on Wednesday, June 3, PC Campedelli was found to have committed gross misconduct.

Detective Chief Superintendent Christina Jessah, of the Central West Basic Command Unit, said: “This was excessive and unjustified use of force against a detainee who was receiving treatment in hospital.

“Actions like PC Campedelli’s have a clear impact on the trust the public has in us keep people safe while in our care.

“The incident was reported by other officers present and I thank them for coming forward so we could take action.

“We remain committed to raising standards and ridding the force of officers who have no place within our organisation.”

PC Campedelli will be placed on the Barred List held by the College of Policing to prevent him re-joining the police or being employed by other related bodies.
