Met Office issues yellow weather warning for ‘intense’ thunderstorms

  • A yellow weather warning for "intense thunderstorms" has been issued across several regions in England for Tuesday afternoon, forecasting lightning, hail, gusty winds, and up to 30mm of rain in under an hour.
  • The warning, in effect from 3pm to 10pm, covers the east Midlands, eastern England, London and southeast England, northwest England, southwest England, west Midlands, and Yorkshire and Humber, with potential for disruption to travel and power supplies.
  • This comes as a heatwave persists, with temperatures potentially reaching 36C in southern England and Wales, following a record-breaking spring temperature of 34.8C.
  • Amber heat health alerts have been extended until Thursday for several regions, including the South West and London, indicating a likely rise in deaths, particularly among vulnerable groups.
  • Hundreds of residents in Kent and Leicestershire are experiencing water supply issues due to high demand during the heatwave, with water companies delivering bottled water and fixing burst mains.
