Manchester United have confirmed that Patrick Dorgu has returned to individual training as he steps up his bid to play again before the end of the season.
Dorgu was struck down by a hamstring injury back in January and has not been seen since, restricting him to just two appearances during the incredible resurgence under interim boss Michael Carrick.
United continue to insist there is no timeline to Dorgu’s return but gleefully confirmed the young Denmark international is back out on the grass, working alone in the next phase of his recovery journey.
Dorgu is hopeful of returning before the end of the season, although optimistic reports have backed him to make a comeback in mid-April.
Dorgu’s Return to Provide Surprise Boost to Man Utd
Since joining United midway through the 2024–25 season, Dorgu has endured a mix run of form. Brought in specifically to aid Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 dreams, he was unable to prevent the boss from being relieved of his duties less than 12 months later.
The future appeared somewhat bleak for Dorgu, but that was before he threatened to reinvent himself as an attacker.
A left back by trade, Dorgu’s last seven Premier League appearances have come far further forward, either as an attacking midfielder under Amorim or as a winger following Carrick’s arrival. That tactical tweak helped Dorgu produce some of the best performances of his United tenure.
Dorgu started both of Carrick’s first two games as a left winger and scored in both, seeing off Manchester City and Arsenal before succumbing to a hamstring injury shortly before the final whistle against the Gunners.
The wave of momentum ridden by United in the last few months has eased the blow of Dorgu’s injury. It has been easy to forget just how impressive he was at the start of Carrick’s reign and, while the team may not have missed him, things could have been even better had Dorgu been able to maintain his form.
His impending return will cause a headache for Carrick, given Matheus Cunha has been enjoying his own spell out on the left, but these are the sorts of problems managers love to face. The added depth will come as a welcome boost to a squad that is sorely lacking out wide after Amorim’s winger cull.
Dorgu will still need a few weeks on the sidelines, but if everything goes according to plan, his comeback will come just as other players find themselves needing a rest. In the battle for Champions League qualification, that could easily prove to be the difference for United.
