A man who was charged with the rape of a teenage girl on the beach at Great Yarmouth and two counts of sexual assault has appeared in court.
Norfolk Police had been investigating reports that two girls had been raped on South Beach Parade in Great Yarmouth in the early hours of May 16.
Madalin Ilinca, a Romanian national, appeared before Norwich Magistrates’ Court charged with the rape of a woman in Great Yarmouth between May 15 and May 16.
He is also charged with two counts of sexual assault in Great Yarmouth between May 15 and May 16.
The complainant in both counts is said to be a woman aged 16 or over.
Ilinca, 34, of Stafford Road, Great Yarmouth, wore a cream-coloured hoody in the dock of the court and clasped his hands together in front of him.
At one point he appeared tearful and said “please”.
The defendant, who has short cropped dark hair and a beard, was not asked to enter pleas to the charges.
He was remanded into custody, with no application for bail made.
Ilinca, who was assisted by an interpreter over a video-link, is due to appear before Norwich Crown Court on July 6.
Norfolk Police previously said Ilinca was stopped at the port of Dover re-entering the UK and subsequently charged.
The force said another man in his 30s, who was arrested on suspicion of rape in connection with the same incident in Northamptonshire on May 17, remains on bail until August 10 while inquiries continue.
