Karl Lagerfeld’s cat locked in an inheritance battle after being left with nothing

  • Seven years after Karl Lagerfeld's death, his famously pampered cat, Choupette, has reportedly not received any of the inheritance that once led to headlines calling her the "world's richest cat".
  • Françoise Caçote, Lagerfeld’s former housekeeper and Choupette's current caretaker, revealed to The Atlantic that they have received "absolutely nothing" and she has hired expensive lawyers to claim the inheritance.
  • Choupette, a 14-year-old blue-cream Birman, now lives in Paris with Caçote and her family, with Caçote continuing to work part-time to support the cat while the legal situation is resolved.
  • The precise value of Lagerfeld’s fortune, the contents of his will, and the amount intended for Choupette remain unclear due to French inheritance documents not being public, tax disputes, and legal challenges, including an unnamed plaintiff contesting the will's validity.
  • Under French law, animals cannot directly inherit, meaning any funds for Choupette would need to pass through a human intermediary like Caçote, who continues to manage Choupette's occasional commercial work through My Pet Agency.
