Jordan World Cup 2026 squad: Jamal Sellami's tournament squad ready for Austria test

Mousa Tamari .

The Jordan World Cup 2026 squad will be one of four debut nations in North America this summer.

Jordan qualified for World Cup 2026 by finishing a point ahead of Iran in AFC qualifying. They subsequently rose to their highest FIFA World Ranking for more than a decade but will have one of the least experienced squads at the tournament when it comes to playing at the highest level.

They'll take part in Group J at the World Cup, meaning they'll face Austria and Algeria as well as Argentina, the reigning world champions and one of the favourites again this summer.

After three consecutive defeats in October and November, Jordan won five matches in a row in December's FIFA Arab Cup, conceding only two goals.

They conceded three goals against Morocco in the final, losing in extra time, and concluded their World Cup preparations with a 2-2 draw against Costa Rica in Turkiye at the end of March.

Jordan have been building towards this World Cup. Prior to their final appearance in December, they were beaten in the final of the Asian Cup by hosts Qatar having beaten Malaysia, Iraq, South Korea and Tajikistan along the way.

They qualified for World Cup 2026 by topping their first AFC group ahead of Saudi Arabia and finishing second in the next group stage behind South Korea.

Mood

The celebrations in Amman last June at Jordan’s first World Cup qualification went on for weeks, not days. Yet it wasn’t necessarily a surprise for a team that broke their tournament knockout stage hoodoo by beating South Korea to reach the 2023 Asian Cup Final, then backed it up with a run to the 2025 Arab Cup showpiece.

Serious injuries to star forwards in Yazan Al Naimat and Ali Olwan, who between them scored 10 of Jordan’s 16 goals in the third round of qualifying, in the months since haven’t helped but the pressure will be off in North America to just enjoy the ride.

Group J standings

Jordan are in Group J at World Cup 2026.

Manager

Who is Jordan's manager?

Jordan manager Jamal Sellami was in an unusual position at the Arab Cup final in December: he is a former Morocco international who played the majority of his career in his home town, Casablanca.

The 55-year-old former midfield player, who scored twice for his country, became the first man to lead Jordan to the World Cup finals in his first managerial job outside Moroccan football.

He was appointed to succeed Hussein Ammouta and has achieved more than any of his predecessors by taking Jordan to a major tournament and the final of the Arab Cup.

Star player

Who is Jordan's star player?

If Jordan are to impress on their World Cup debut, Rennes winger and national team captain Musa Al-Taamari will be at the heart of it. He didn't play at the Arab Cup but will be key to the Chivalrous Ones' fortunes this summer.

Al-Taamari, who needs 10 goals to equal former teammate Hamza Al-Dardour's Jordanian goalscoring record, has played in the UEFA region since moving to APOEL in Cyprus eight years ago.

He has since played in Belgium and with Montpellier and Rennes in Ligue 1.
