India successfully tests Agni-1 Ballistic Missile

India conducted the successful test-launch of Short Range Ballistic Missile ‘Agni-1’ from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, Odisha on Friday.

The test was carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command and it validated all operational and technical parameters.

"Short Range Ballistic Missile ‘Agni-1’ was successfully test-launched from the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, Odisha on May 22, 2026. Conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command, the launch validated all operational and technical parameters, reaffirming the credibility of India’s strategic deterrence capability," the Ministry of Defence announced.

Earlier this month, the country conducted the successful flight-trial of an advanced Agni missile with the Multiple Independently Targeted Re-Entry Vehicle (MIRV) system from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) tested the Agni missile with multiple payloads, targeted to different targets spatially distributed over a large geographical area in the Indian Ocean Region.

DRDO carried out the telemetry and tracking by multiple ground and ship-based stations. The deployed systems tracked the entire missile trajectory from lift-off till the impact of all payloads.

Flight data, as said by the defence ministry, confirmed that all mission objectives were met during the trial.

"With this successful trial, India once again demonstrated the capability to target multiple strategic targets using a single missile system. This missile is developed by DRDO laboratories with the support of Industries across the country. The trial was witnessed by senior scientists of DRDO and the Indian Army personnel," the ministry said in a statement.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh asserted that the development will add an incredible capability to the country's defence preparedness against the growing threat perceptions.
