Celtic defender Liam Scales didn’t have much time to rest as he was back in action for Ireland on Thursday, where he picked up the Man-of-the-Match award.

His national side was in action against Qatar at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin, in an international friendly. Just under 29,000 fans were in attendance, with Ireland winning 1-0 thanks to a Nathan Collins goal after five minutes.

Both nations were reduced to 10 men on either side of half-time as Qatar stepped up their preparations for the World Cup.

And Scales, fresh off the back of securing a domestic double with his club, was deemed the best player on the park.

The 27-year-old had a moment to briefly talk about the ‘mad’ campaign that saw Celtic retain their title on the final day and clinch the Scottish Cup the following weekend. He said “Yeah, it’s been a bit mad all right. But it was a really good season, to finish on high, with Celtic.

“And it’s good to get the win tonight too as well. Victory in the last home game of the season. It was good for the home fans.

"Yeah, happy all around.”
