How to clear both Angel Combs in Subnautica 2

Subnautica 2 Angel Comb.

Clearing your first Angel Comb in Subnautica 2 is a multi-stage challenge, as you move from chamber to chamber, destroying viral blooms in order to heal this very sick undersea flower. Angel Combs offer Adaptations, and the first one grants Heat Tolerance, meaning, you guessed it, that you can enter the lava vent area without fear of underwater combustion.

You'll find another Angel Comb later in Subnautica 2's early access and you'll actually need a special method to beat this, but I'll cover that below.

How to clear the first Angel Comb in Subnautica 2

A short while after you start exploring the initial areas, you should encounter the first Angel Comb, about 200 meters northwest of the Lifepod, bearing about 300 degrees on the compass, in a cave. This pod is sealed shut, but contain the Heat Tolerance Adaptation, similar to the one to digest food you grab at the start of the game.

This Adaptation is vital if you want to continue the story to investigate the Tadpole Pens and gather materials like gold.

First, though, you'll need to:

  • Unlock the Sonic Resonator tool
  • Improve your O2 capacity by crafting the Standard Air Tank and bringing at least one Air Bladder
  • I also suggest bringing some medical kits, a distraction flare, and to either craft the Wakemaker , or at least grab the Dash Biomod from the Welcome Center to the south-east of the Lifepod

Now to clear an Angel Comb, you need to follow each of the big tubes from the central comb chamber until you find the chambers with the viral growths. The water will be murky here, and each chamber will contain flower growths, plus larvae-like fish who will attack when you get close. You need to blast each flower with the Sonic Resonator to destroy it.

I recommend charging up, then using the Dash to quickly close the distance and remove each, since the worms will stop attacking after each flower is gone.

There are two chambers like this, and then you'll have to head back to clear the central one with the comb itself. If you find yourself running low on oxygen while doing this, look for funnels blocked with Bloom Sap—you can hack this away with your Survival Multitool to get oxygen.

The Angel Comb will open once you destroy the viral flowers in each chamber and then the ones around the comb itself (Image credit: Unknown Worlds)

Since the central chamber is much more challenging due to the patrolling big predatory fish, you'll want to toss out that distraction flare to occupy it and then quickly blast the flowers around the room.

Once done, the Angel Comb will open, letting you claim the Heat Tolerance Adaptation by interacting with it. Now you can head to the lava zone without fear of melting.

How to clear the Alien Ruins Angel Comb in Subnautica 2

Once you arrive in the Alien Ruins area, there's a second Angel Comb to complete, but you might be puzzled by the fact that its viral blooms close up when you get near, making them impossible to blast. To destroy this Angel Comb, you're going to need to:

  • Acquire the Feedback Resonator upgrade for the Sonic Resonator : This fires projectiles, letting you destroy the viral blooms from a distance without them closing shut.
  • Find and craft the Tadpole Depth Module : Completing this Angel Comb requires you to go under 250 meters, so you'll need this upgrade for your Tadpole.

There are three sections of the Angel Comb you'll have to clear, before then also doing the main section by the Angel Comb itself. You can find these by following the big purple tubes that branch off from the comb, but I'll direct you to each one below also.

1. Under the Alien Ruins Research Base

This one is easy to find, in a cavern underneath the plateau where the Alien Ruins Research Base is located. Head down and destroy the flowers to cleanse the comb.

2. Branching off to the side

If you head east-southeast from the Alien Ruins Research Base and descend the cliff, you'll spot a big purple tube leading towards the main Angel Comb—follow this, but then look for where it splits off into another purple tube going right, before it reaches the comb itself. Down this small ravine you'll find another viral bloom area to clear.

3. Under a shipwreck

The last Angel Comb section is the trickiest. As before, follow the main purple tube to the central Angel Comb, then head northeast along the purple tube leading away through the ravine there.

Just before you reach the area with the green-glowing pools where the leviathan patrols above, you'll spot a purple tube going right into a cliffface, so follow this, and then ascend the cliff. At the top, you'll find a crashed ship with some Bloom Biofilm blocking the entrance. Blast this open, head down through the ship, and you'll find the next viral bloom in a cave underneath. Remember, you can refill your O2 while down here using the oxygen tunic plants.

Once this is clear, and assuming you've done the others, head back to the main Angel Comb and clear that area so it opens. This will unlock the Axum Vision Adaptation, which lets you interact with alien devices, allowing to start repairing the Alien Power Plant directly above you.
