High Potential has said farewell to one of its series regulars in a dramatic season two finale cliffhanger.

ABC’s hit crime procedural — starring Kaitlin Olson as Morgan, a quirky, highly intelligent single mother who is hired by the LAPD as a consultant to solve difficult crimes — concluded its second season Tuesday, leaving Captain Nick Wagner’s (Steve Howey) future unclear.
The end of the episode saw Wagner gravely injured after being shot during a secret meeting with an FBI source, whom his corrupt politician father connected him with for information on Morgan’s missing ex. Morgan then arrived at the scene to find Wagner bleeding out.
While Wagner’s fate is left uncertain, the episode marked Howey’s final appearance as a series regular, according to Deadline. Howey joined as a series regular last October on a one-year contract, which has now expired, the outlet reported. Sources told Deadline that it is unclear at the moment whether he will leave the show for good or whether he could return as a guest star next season.

The Independent has contacted ABC for comment.
Wagner’s character has been divisive among viewers. He first appeared on the series sporting a mustache, which was quickly decried by enough viewers that producers had him shave it, per Deadline. The look was reportedly a holdover from another show Howey had been filming, which required a full beard.
Even after his appearance was cleaned up, Wagner’s presence remained divisive among fans as it fueled a major love triangle with Morgan and Detective Karadec (Daniel Sunjata).
Of introducing Wagner this season, Olson recently told Variety: “We wanted to have a little bit of a mystery, and we also wanted to stump Morgan. It was very important to me that she’s not always right about everything. I like that she’s a very intelligent person, and she’s also human and doesn’t know whether to trust this man.
“Who is he? Does he need something from her? Is he actually interested in her? So that was fun to explore and play with. It’s always more fun to have people actually fall for each other, and then it’s heartbreaking to have it be ripped apart.”
In season two’s penultimate episode, Morgan and Wagner shared their first and only kiss, disappointing fans who had been rooting for a romance between Karadec and Morgan.
Yet, with Wagner’s exit, the door is now open for a potential future between Morgan and Karadec — who, to some viewers’ chagrin, rekindled a romance with his ex-fiancée Lucia (Susan Kelechi Watson) despite clearly having unresolved feelings for Morgan.
High Potential has been a ratings success for the network since its 2024 debut. It was renewed for a third season last month and is expected to return to screens sometime in the fall of 2027.
