Giro d'Italia GC standings – Breakaway sees outsiders rise as maglia rosa stays put

The breakaway on stage 11 of the Giro d'Italia.

Stage 11 of the Giro d'Italia was one for the breakaway, and although several riders high up in the GC standings made the day's move, only one managed to move into the top 10 as a result.

Chris Harper (Pinarello-Q36.5) was the biggest winner on the day, finishing fourth on the stage won by Jhonatan Narváez (UAE Team Emirates XRG).

The Australian gained 3:13 on the maglia rosa group to rocket up seven places into 10th overall.

Afonso Eulálio (Bahrain Victorious) continues to lead the GC standings with the same 27-second advantage over Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) left after Tuesday's time trial.

Behind the Dane, Thymen Arensman (Netcompany Ineos) is third with a 1:57 deficit to the Portuguese rider, while Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM) continues to lie in fourth at 2:24.

Three Australians make up the next three places in the standings, with Ben O'Connor (Jayco-AlUla) at 2:48, Jai Hindley (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) at 3:06 and Michael Storer (Tudor) seventh overall at 3:28.

Canadian Derek Gee-West (Lidl-Trek) is next in line, six seconds further in arrears, holding a two-second advantage over ninth-placed Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe).

Christian Scaroni (XDS Astana) slipped into the breakaway, too, but while in the lead, he crashed on the descent from the Colle di Guaitarola and lost touch. He spent the rest of the stage chasing and, as a result, climbed three spots into 13th.

The racing continues on Thursday with stage 12, for another hilly, breakaway-friendly stage to Novi Ligure.
