Co-op horror games have been going through a revolution ever since Lethal Company proved that small-scale projects can be worldwide hits so long as they maintain a strong meme factor, which eventually got so popular that it is now collectively referred to as "friendslop."
And while the term is generally overapplied, it certainly is a great way to describe certain games, such as Titan Hunters, an upcoming co-op tower defense title where you and up to three friends defend your castle against attacking titans (yes, that was on purpose). You man cannons, play around with the game's physics, and fend off these skinless giants whose sole mission in life is to eat you alive.
Both in design and in premise, the game is blatantly inspired by Attack on Titan, even too inspired, I'd say, because the titans themselves do not merely share their names with the manga's characters. No, they literally look the same, outside of a few creative differences such as overexaggerated faces and eyeballs that lean more into comedy than the manga does.
Of course, there are also other, more original titans, such as one ginormous chicken with glowing eyes, so it's not a total copy through and through, but man, if it isn't barely avoiding copyright claims.
And the game is so self-aware that in its promotional screenshots, there's a player called "Slopaladin," actively playing into the inevitable "friendslop" label that is going to be applied to the game. Despite all this, the game genuinely does look fun, as Attack on Titan and its whole premise are so incredibly good that it's about damn time we got a game that is even remotely based on it.
The game is yet to receive an actual release date, and I wouldn't be surprised if it got delayed even further by some sort of lawsuit or complaint issued by Attack on Titan creator Hajime Isayama, that is, if he's done drinking the tears of his fans who still cry about both the manga and the anime's endings.
I, for one, never saw the ending as I stopped at the last film, so my rage is as of yet contained, though I have to say that the anime fell off a cliff after the first part of season three.
Anyhow, I'm getting sidetracked. Titan Hunters' release is TBD, but we'll keep you posted if anything of note happens.
